Is It Safe To Travel To Mexico?

Is it safe to travel to Mexico?, In recent months much it has been written in the press about the kidnappings, shootings and crimes committed in broad daylight in several cities in Mexico. It is a fact, there's no denying that these events happen daily.
But on the other hand we share a long border with the United States, arguably the world's most powerful country and also our first market in tourism and if anything have the "gringos" is that they are very observant of what happens in other countries, heed terrorist alerts or security authorities and do know better than anyone the situation that exists in Mexico.
I mention this because it might seem a contradiction what the numbers tell us in tourism on this market:
In 2012 nearly six million Americans visited Mexico and during the first quarter of 2013, an increase of 5.9% of tourists experiment compared to the previous year. Since violence and crimes in Mexico they had even decreased with the change of government.
Reality
It is obvious perhaps, but just take a look at the Mexican geography and news to know which are the most dangerous places in Mexico to visit or sightseeing. Also recently came out a ranking of the 50 most dangerous cities in the world, what do you think? 9 of them are Mexican:

    Acapulco Guerrero
    Torreon, Coahuila
    Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas
    Culiacan, Sinaloa
    Cuernavaca, Morelos
    Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua

    Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas
    Monterrey, Nuevo Leon
Now this list is representative but does not indicate exact data on how many tourists were attacked in these cities. Just take the example of Acapulco, is considered the most violent city in Mexico (according to this ranking), the reality is that it remains one of the most visited places in Mexico by Mexicans themselves !. Another irony right ?.

As also can be seen, most of these cities are in the northern part of Mexico, are even cities or states bordering the United States. Think the reason is obvious, (trafficking of arms, drugs, prostitution, etc.)
The situation in these states or cities is also given on its roads, not listed but Michoacan is one of the states that this 2014 has had more problems in terms of safety. Recently he was presumably kidnapped Devert Harry, an American who sought to ride his Harley Davidson to Brazil. To date nothing is known of the and it was in the roads of Michoacan and Jalisco where he disappeared.
So, visit or not to visit Mexico?
In all honesty I can tell you that if you visit Mexico. But is not the same travel to somewhere on the border with Mexico that Cancun or the Riviera Maya. The risks are different according to each destination, activities and travel plans.
